My shifter has been looking a bit worn out for a while now so I finally got round to changing it. The rubber had almost worn down to the plastic beneath and it had done 6000 miles. One of the cables frayed and jammed up so it was a good time to do it. The shifter resistance had been higher than I had liked even after discovering the problem with the shift interface and the dropouts. It turns out that the plastic bearing within the shifter wears out and adding grease doesn't really help. It made such a difference when the new shifter was fitted.
I was thinking that there is definitely a market for a better metal alternative. The other day when searching Ebay for second hand hubs I came across the exact thing I was thinking of. The other great thing about it is that it can be fitted to road bikes and all kinds of curved handlebars. It has numbers for Rohloff hub's but I assume by the title it work well for NuVinci hub's also and is not indexed.

Here's the Ebay description translated from German with the help of Google. You can always trust the Germans to look at something and think I can do better, they won't tolerate plastic ****.
The Twister by Gilles Berthoud is a CNC milled twist shifter for Rohloff hub or Nuvinci.
Very high quality shifter made entirely of aluminum, completely dismantlable.
This also allows the mounting on curved handlebars. The knob has a large bore, which can accommodate mounting on tightly bent handlebars (eg racing bikes / Bullhorn).
The twist shifter is then reduced only by a spacer.
This reduction is for 24 mm handlebars Road / Race handlebars.
(Also available with 22mm spacer for MTB / Trekking handlebars. There is a natural aluminium colour as well instead of the black version.)
The shift cables can be changed very easily, because of the shift handle can be completely disassembled.
Might give one a go if I feel like spending over £100.
